Sound moderator

A sound moderator is a device attached to an air rifle barrel that reduces the noise of a shot. It works by dispersing and slowing escaping air through a system of baffles. Sound moderators are used for quieter shooting in gardens, during hunting, or at training sessions.

What is a sound moderator and how does it work?

When an air rifle fires, compressed air escapes behind the pellet. The sudden expansion of this air creates a loud sound, similar to a crack. A sound moderator captures the escaping air in a chamber and uses baffles to gradually disperse and slow it down. The air then escapes in a controlled, quieter manner.

The more chambers and baffles a moderator contains, the more effectively it suppresses sound. The Benjamin Marauder with its integrated system reaches 68 dB compared to 113 dB from an unsuppressed air rifle. A difference of 45 dB is significant and corresponds to roughly a thirtyfold reduction in perceived loudness.

Effectiveness by air rifle type

Air rifle type Effectiveness Reason
PCP Very high Main noise source is escaping air
CO2 High Similar principle to PCP
Spring piston Medium Mechanical spring noise cannot be suppressed
Gas piston Medium Part of the noise comes from the mechanism

Benefits of using a sound moderator

  • Noise reduction – typically 15–30 dB, making shooting much more pleasant
  • Improved accuracy – reduced turbulence behind the pellet stabilizes its flight
  • Sound directionality – sound is directed toward the target and spreads less to the sides
  • Hearing protection – safer shooting without ear protection
  • Discretion – less disturbance to neighbors when shooting in a garden

Mounting a sound moderator

Sound moderators attach via threading on the barrel. The most common standards are:

  • 1/2 UNF – the most widespread, British and American standard
  • M14×1 – European metric standard
  • M15×1 – used on some models, less common

Before buying, check whether your air rifle has a threaded barrel or whether you need an adapter. Some air rifles have an integrated moderator built into the barrel shroud, which cannot be removed.

Realistic expectations and legal status

A sound moderator will NOT silence a shot completely. The typical reduction is 15–30 dB. A PCP air rifle at 95 dB drops to approximately 65 dB. On spring-piston air rifles the effect is smaller due to mechanical noise that the moderator cannot address. Do not expect "movie-level" silence.

Sound moderators for air rifles are subject to different regulations depending on your country. In the United States, airgun moderators are largely unregulated and do not fall under NFA classification. In the United Kingdom, they are freely available for airguns with no license required. In other countries, rules may vary. Always check your local laws before purchasing.

When choosing a moderator, consider its length and weight. Longer moderators suppress sound better but shift the balance of the gun. For benchrest shooting this is not an issue, but for offhand shooting a shorter model may be more practical.
