Hop-Up
Hop-up is a mechanism in airsoft guns that applies backspin to a BB. This spin stabilizes the projectile in flight and greatly increases both range and accuracy.
What is hop-up
Hop-up uses the Magnus effect – a spinning object in an airflow generates lift. A rubber pad (bucking) contacts the top of the BB and applies backspin. The BB then flies on a flatter trajectory and reaches a greater distance.
Hop-up system components:
- Hop-up chamber: Housing for the entire mechanism
- Bucking: Rubber pad that contacts the BB
- Nub: Button that transfers pressure to the bucking
- Adjustment wheel: Controls hop-up intensity
Hop-up adjustment
Proper hop-up adjustment directly affects range and accuracy:
| Setting | Trajectory | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Too weak | BB drops down | Short range |
| Correct | Flat trajectory | Maximum range and accuracy |
| Too strong | BB curves upward | Unstable flight |
The ideal setting depends on BB weight and gun power. Heavier BBs need stronger hop-up.
Types of hop-up systems
Several hop-up designs exist:
- Standard: Basic adjustable system
- Rotary: Rotary adjustment for finer control
- Flat hop: Flat bucking for more consistent contact
- R-hop: Rubber patch inside the barrel for top accuracy
Hop-up maintenance
To keep your hop-up working reliably:
- Clean the barrel regularly to remove debris
- Check the bucking for wear and cracks
- Use quality BBs without defects
- Do not lubricate the bucking with silicone oil
A worn bucking is the most common cause of accuracy loss. Replacement is simple and cheap.
