Pepperball
Pepperball is a spherical projectile with a brittle shell filled with pepper powder. On impact, it breaks apart and creates a cloud of irritant.
What is a pepperball
A pepperball is a type of ammunition containing powdered oleoresin capsicum (OC) – the active ingredient in pepper spray. When it hits the target, the ball shatters and releases irritant powder.
Pepperball characteristics:
- Caliber: Typically .43, .50, or .68
- Fill: OC powder (2–5%)
- Range: ~50–100 ft depending on the launcher
- Effect: Immediate irritation
Pepperball vs pepper spray
| Feature | Pepperball | Pepper spray |
|---|---|---|
| Range | ~50–100 ft | ~10–16 ft |
| Accuracy | High | Medium (spray pattern) |
| Capacity | 8–20 rounds | 5–15 seconds of spray |
| Wind sensitivity | Minimal | High |
Common uses
Pepperballs are used for:
- Self-defense: Stopping an attacker from a safe distance
- Home protection: Defending property without lethal force
- Crowd control: Law enforcement applications
- Animal deterrence: Repelling aggressive dogs or wildlife
Legal status
Pepperball legality varies by jurisdiction. In many US states, pepperball launchers are classified as less-lethal devices and do not require a firearms permit. Some states and countries impose age restrictions (typically 18+) or ban them outright. Always check local laws before purchasing or carrying a pepperball launcher.
A pepperball hit causes temporary incapacitation. Effects wear off within 30–45 minutes with no lasting harm.
