RAM
RAM (Real Action Marker) is a category of guns that fire less-lethal projectiles designed for training, sport, and self-defense. The best-known RAM platform is the T4E system by Umarex.
What is RAM
RAM guns are replicas of real firearms adapted to shoot rubber, chalk, or pepper projectiles. They run on CO2 and use a blowback system for a realistic shooting experience. Calibers range from .43 to .68.
RAM characteristics:
- Less-lethal projectiles: Rubber, chalk, pepper
- Realistic design: Modeled after real firearms
- CO2 or HPA powered: Compressed gas propulsion
- No firearms license required in many jurisdictions

Common uses
RAM guns serve a wide range of purposes:

- Self-defense: Pepper and rubber projectiles for personal protection
- Home defense: A less-lethal alternative to firearms
- MilSim games: Realistic military simulations
- Security force training: Force-on-force exercises
Legal status
Regulations for RAM guns vary by country and state. In many jurisdictions, RAM launchers with energy output below a set threshold (e.g., 16 J) do not require a firearms license. Buyers must typically be 18 or older. Carrying or using a RAM gun in public may be subject to the same rules as other weapons, so check local laws before purchase.
When used in self-defense, the response must be proportionate to the threat under applicable self-defense statutes.
