Het ontwerp van de luchtrevolver lijkt misschien licht, maar dat is puur om het gewicht te verlagen. In de revolver zit een degelijke stalen loop en uiteraard zijn de magazijnhouder en het basisframe van metaal.
De Colt Python 357 Magnum wordt standaard geleverd met magazijnen voor zowel diabolo's als stalen BB-kogels. Voor nauwkeuriger schieten kun je loden diabolo's van kaliber 4,5 mm gebruiken. Voor krachtig schieten gebruik je het magazijn voor stalen BB. Beide magazijntypen hebben een capaciteit van 10 schoten.
Omdat het trekkermechanisme van de luchtrevolver ook in Dual Action-modus vrij gevoelig is, heeft de Python een veiligheid tegen ongewenste ontsteking. Die bevindt zich achter de haan van de revolver. Voor een uiterst lichte trekker kun je in Single Action-modus schieten: span de haan met je duim en druk de trekker vervolgens lichtjes in met je wijsvinger.
De 12 g CO2-patroon die de Colt Python van energie voorziet, wordt in de greep onder de linkergreep geplaatst.
Werking van het CO2-systeem: de CO2-patroon wordt in het wapen geplaatst en mechanisch op de pen geperst. Bij het overhalen van de trekker slaat de haan op de klepstift en opent het klep. Hierdoor stroomt CO2-gas uit de patroon, dat het projectiel uit de loop stuwt.
De Colt Python met catalogusnummer 5.8147 is geschikt voor zowel stalen BB-kogels als diabolo's; de constructie is een combinatie van metaal en polymeer om het gewicht te verlagen. Het model met dezelfde naam maar catalogusnummer 5.8193 is alleen voor stalen BB-kogels, heeft een volledig metalen constructie en het munitie wordt in realistische patronen geladen.
