Au premier coup d'œil, on voit clairement qu'il s'agit d'une version revisitée du pistolet à gaz Walther P99, mais contrairement à ce dernier, il se distingue par un chargeur modernisé et un dispositif de sécurité contre les tirs accidentels. Une autre nouveauté réside dans le mécanisme de déverrouillage du chargeur, situé sur la crosse de l’arme. La qualité et la fiabilité sont également renforcées par un cadre interne en polymère et des pièces métalliques de précision, également utilisées sur les armes à feu réelles. Grâce à cette conception, le pistolet Walther PPQ M2 peut être classé parmi les pistolets à gaz les plus légers.
